Turkish American Society of Wisconsin and Office of International Education at Marquette University cordially invites you to join a program to discuss the recent turmoil in Turkey, with a particular lens on the essential role of journalism in a democracy.

We will be featuring the voice of an exiled journalist, former Editor-In-Chief of Zaman newspaper, Mr. Abdulhamit Bilici.

Abdülhamit Bilici, the Turkish newspaper executive who prompted by political turmoil and government oppression of the media in Turkey, is now in exile in the United States. Before leaving Turkey, Bilici was Editor-in-Chief and columnist of Turkey’s highly regarded, largest newspaper, Zaman which had a circulation of about 650,000 before government seizure in March, 2016. He was Chief Executive Officer of its English-language version, Today’s Zaman. As an experienced newspaper man, he acquired his journalistic acumen as a Zaman daily correspondent; Aksiyon Magazine editor, 1995-1997; Zaman Daily foreign news editor, 1998-2001; Zaman Daily general editor, 2001-2008; Citan News Agency general editor; and then Zaman Newspaper Editor-inChief. He is a graduate of Boğaziçi University (Bosphorus University) in Istanbul, Turkey.

Bilici is an expert on Turkish politics and speaks on the ongoing political crisis. He is editor of the book Why Turkey?, which combines perspectives Turkey-EU relations by political and opinion leaders from Turkey, Europe, America and Asia.
